PCR testing remains integral to our country’s efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Our healthcare providers rely on testing laboratories to verify COVID-19 cases. Since the initial outbreak, our government has exerted much effort in improving our PCR testing capabilities. With almost half a year into the pandemic, just how far have our healthcare come in addressing our PCR testing requirements?

Increased Capabilities
When the virus started gaining traction, one of the most glaring deficiency our medical providers faced was the lack of testing laboratories. The RITM and a handful of laboratories were insufficient to handle the sudden influx of samples delivered to the for verification. Since then, authorizing bodies have accredited more laboratories, boosting the 19 initial testing centers to 83.
This significant increase impacted our national testing capacity. By June, we have already addressed the backlog of samples caused by the previous lack of testing laboratories. At the moment, RT-PCR laboratories have an average turnaround time of 50 hours while the GeneXpert laboratories can provide results within just 1 to 2 days through their semi-automated RT-PCR technology.

Rising Complications
Backlogs have recently begun to appear once more with 12,208 samples still left to be tested. Last July 3, the backlogs rose to an all-time high with more than 16,000 samples. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that newly accredited laboratories may be overwhelmed with the sudden amount of testing. To remedy this, these laboratories are limiting the new cases they take on to address the backlog samples first.
RITM, our country’s principal testing laboratory, is also facing their own issues. They have been experiencing equipment breakdowns, likely due to working round the clock. A significant portion of their staff are also under quarantine due to viral exposure. These factors have resulted for the laboratory to have 5,700 backlogs.
MAN Pharma hopes to provide our Filipino testing labs with PCR diagnostic kits and equipment to tackle these backlogs.

With a definitive cure or vaccine still unavailable to the public, healthcare professionals have advised that at the moment, mass testing is the most ideal strategy in controlling the coronavirus outbreak. Last April 24, the The Inter-Agency Task Force – National Task Force (IATF-NTF) and the DOH have announced that the RT-PCR testing for COVID-19 will be significantly expanded. From the current average of 4,500 PCR tests conducted per day, the government wishes to be able to do at least 30,000 tests per day by May 30, 2020. As the most trusted method both by the DOH and most medical professionals, what exactly is PCR testing and why is it deemed by medical experts as the most reliable testing method?

PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction and has been a recognized and widely used molecular method since the 1980’s. It allows those at the lab to extract from swab samples and extract a viral genetic material called RNA. This material is necessary to create a complimentary strand of DNA which is crucial for the next stage. Extraction usually takes less than 30 minutes.

The COVID-19 virus has 30,000 nucleotides, the sort of building blocks that composes the RNA and DNA. According to a study done by researchers in the Clinical Virology Laboratory at UW Medicine, there are 100 nucleotides that are unique in the COVID-19 virus. Within those 100 nucleotides, there are specific genes that the PCR method will look for to definitively determine the presence of the virus.

The constructed DNA strand from the extraction process will be amplified through a technique called reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Through amplification, the PCR machine makes thousands of copies of the DNA strand to make it measurable and easier to study. PCR machines differ in which specific COVID-19 genes they would target (RdRp gene, N gene, E gene). If two or more of these genes are confirmed to be within the sample, the person under investigation is verified to be a carrier of the coronavirus disease.

The DOH relies on PCR method for confirmatory COVID-19 testing. What makes the PCR testing the method of choice for most medical professionals is that it is both specific and sensitive, with most PCR machines’s sensitivity and specificity being 90% and above . This is why, in accordance to the guidelines released by DOH, rapid antibody tests must still be conducted in conjunction with PCR tests. The level of accuracy it offers is greatly needed, especially at a time where diagnostic certainty is at its most crucial.

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread across the Philippines, health experts warn us that people with pre-existing conditions must exercise increased precautions against the disease. While they are not more likely to catch the virus, the complications that they may experience when they do get it are far more serious and possibly fatal than COVID-19 patients without pre-existing conditions.

For persons with diabetes, the disease can cause their blood sugar to fluctuate. As a way to give the body the energy it needs to fight off the virus, stored glucose is automatically released into the bloodstream. For persons with diabetes, however, the incapability to produce the necessary insulin to cope with this could trigger the blood sugars to rise. The continuous and often uncontrollable shift in blood sugar levels during this time could cause long-term harm to a person with diabetes’ health, particularly for their eyes, feet and other areas of the body.

That is why, aside from the generally advised social distancing and hygienic guidelines, people with diabetes must practice these added protective measures to keep themselves healthy and safe from the COVID-19.

Check your blood sugar more frequently.

If you do perform regular glucose monitoring, consult your adviser if you’d need to have it checked more often than usual. This is especially important if you are a PUI or PUM. It is advisable for people with Type 1 diabetes to have theirs checked 4 times daily, including at night. If your glucose level is noticeably high, notify your health adviser immediately.

Various health concerns were raised this week from the Taal Volcano’s recent eruption. Its ash spewing began on January 12, 2020 and, at the moment of writing, is showing no signs of stopping any time soon. The half-mile high column of ashes was released into the atmosphere, blanketing nearby cities and provinces in clouds of ash falls.

Affected Filipinos have taken precautions for any possible health complications that the ash fall could bring. Evacuations were implemented. Face masks were dutifully worn. Doors and windows remained bolted shut. While these are all important practices that would help ensure our safety, we need to remind ourselves of the wellness of our pets as well. They are vulnerable to the health hazards of ash falls and requires our attention in ensuring that they remain safe and healthy during these calamities.

Here are some of the precautionary tips that we could practice in taking care of our pets during and after ash falls.

1. Keep your pets indoors.

Exposure to ash can cause serious damage to your pet’s eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Prolonged exposure can also be fatal since animals inhale more particles at a time than humans. Do not forget to close off your doggie doors.

2. If your pet did go outside, remove the ashes from their body immediately.

Do this by vacuuming them or giving them a bath. You can also wipe the ashes off with fresh towel. Do not let them lick the ash from their body.

3. Check their food and water bowls.

Make sure that their food and water bowls are not exposed and are free from ash. Frequently change the water in their bowls too.

4. Watch out for signs of respiratory problems.

These symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing, sneezing, etc. If these symptoms are present, have your pets checked by a veterinarian immediately.

5. Keep your surroundings clean.

Sweep or wash off the ashes from yards, patios, or other outdoor areas. Do not let your pets sniff around or play in areas where ashes have settled on.

6. Prepare an emergency kit for your pet.

This would be incredibly useful for when emergency evacuations are needed. Make sure to include the following items in your kit.
• Collar/harness and leash for each dog and a carrier for each cat.
• Canned or dry food that will last three to seven days
• Pet feeding dishes and water bowls
• Cat litter, small litter box, litter scoop, and plastic bags for waste disposal
• Photocopies and/or USB stick with medical records. Vaccination records are a must.
• Waterproof container with a two-week supply of any medicine your pet requires
• Pet first-aid kit
• Favorite toy or bed and favorite treats
• Information tag and photographs of your pets

The Philippines is no stranger to the sweltering heat and humid air brought by the fast-approaching summer season. As the temperature rises, so do the number of people at the pools and beaches. With just a splash of the crisp and cool water, Filipinos know how to kick things up a notch and enjoy the summer heat. Our pets, however, do not have the same tolerance. We may bring them outdoors to have fun with us but know that they are prone to heat stroke and dehydration as well. It is important to keep tabs on them and their health. Here are a few reminders on how we can keep our pets safe this summer season:

1. Never leave them unattended.

summer
This rule applies to our everyday routine. In summer, however, it’s a different issue. Our pets may want to cool down by going out of the house to catch a gust of wind even when the sun is at its peak. If they’re in a car, make sure to leave the windows open for them to get some much needed air. The inside of a car can be hot and may lead to suffocation or heat stroke. Always accompany them and make sure that you and your pet stay hydrated.

2. Avoid going out as much as possible.

summer
If you think the sun isn’t going to tone down its heat, it’s best to stay indoors and only go out when the sun is setting. The concrete pavement can be hot, especially for your pet’s paws. For better comfort, make sure to stay in a well-ventilated room. If you have an AC,  just make sure that it’s at a temperature that allows you and your dog’s body to properly adjust from the outdoor heat. You don’t want you or your dog to get sick in the summer now, do you?

Here are some of the breeds that are susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke:
– Extreme Himalayan Cats
– Persian Cats
– Pekinese
– Boston Terriers
– Japanese Chins
– Bulldogs
– Pugs

3. Fluids are important.

summer
For your pet, make sure they have a steady supply of cool, fresh, and clean drinking water. Do not force them to drink it since they will most likely do that on their own. Just make sure the water is not too cold or else they’d be surprised to know how you tried to freeze them. They will feel betrayed.

4. Avoid taking walks on hot sand.

summer
If you plan on hitting the beach, the sand may be too hot for your pet’s paws. The surface of the sand becomes hot since it is more exposed to the deadly rays of the sun. Beach chairs and even towels on the sand can also retain heat. These could make your pets feel uncomfortable and irritable. It’s best to let them retreat to somewhere cooler.

5. Do not shave them.

summer
Your pet’s fur isn’t just their outer layer but their barrier from the heat of the sun as well. Their mane helps them to feel cool (literally and figuratively) during the summer.

6. Remain vigilant of your pet’s behavior.

summer
If you start noticing something strange about your pet’s behavior, don’t overlook these symptoms and have them checked at a local veterinarian. This could either be an effect of the heat or an underlying condition you’re unaware of.
Having fun in the sun is the epitome of a summer escapade. But let’s not forget that it also brings heat-related conditions that can harm us and our beloved pets. We must stay vigilant at all times to make the most out of the summer season.

Have you ever had a day so terrible you just want to bawl your eyes out? Yeah, we’ve all been there. Good thing our boys and girls are here to help us. And when we say boys and girls, we mean our adorable and loving pets. Dogs, in particular, are sensitive to human emotions and can tell whether you’re happy or sad. A scientific study found that dogs can pick up your mood and will therefore adhere to your needs by comforting you. Although they may not fully understand what you really feel or what you’re going through, dogs will always be sensitive and reactive to your #feels.
Here are four ways your dog can react to emotional distress:

1. Physical Contact

This is probably one of your pet’s most common ways of telling you that it will be okay and whatever you’re going through will be over. They’re great cuddlers and can give you all the attention you need whenever you need them.

2. Distraction

Sometimes, your dog will be in an outgoing mood just to bring your mood up. When you’re down and you feel them tugging you or putting something on your lap, maybe play or take a walk with them to relive you of your grief or frustrations. If all else fails, they can always tend to you through physical contact.

3. Exercise

Like distraction, your dog may get you to do things unintentionally and that includes exercising with them. Physical activity eases symptoms of depression and anxiety. So if you’re going through a rough spell, walking your dog might just be a great idea.

4. Space

Not all dogs are like most dogs. Some tend to leave you alone because they prefer you to have your own space. They know you’ve been stricken with grief or are under some stress and want to give you ample time to recuperate. It’s their way of saying, “Whenever you’re ready, I’m here.”
Every dog is different so don’t feel bummed if they don’t immediately come to your aid when you’re feeling down. Your dog loves you and maybe just has trouble relating to your sadness. If they want to help you, let them but don’t vent your anger or frustrations on them. They’re only concerned about you. Either way, they will be there with you every step of the way because your relationship is complex and unique. They love you unconditionally and that alone is something to be thankful for.

Filipinos are already used to our country’s sweltering summers and the occasional rainfall scattered across the year. That is why the recent temperature drops brought by the cold front (a.k.a. the “Christmas Weather” extension) have become a welcomed change for most of us. And from the looks of it, we can still expect this cold and dry season in the days to come.
Although this may be a good thing, let’s not forget that diseases, such as the flu, are also impending and that we should all protect ourselves, including our pets, from them. Sure, we may think our pets are not that susceptible to the cold due to their thick fur but that’s where we are wrong. They get cold too and can be at risk of experiencing weather-related sickness. That’s why we’ve listed down a few tips and reminders on how to keep our pets cozy and warm during the cold weather.

1. If you’re cold, chances are your pet is too.

cold weather
Our pets experience the cold as well, especially during the peak hours of the morning and evening so might as well wrap him/her in a big hug and bask in each other’s warmth.

2. Go for shorter walks.

cold weather
Because of the chilly weather, warm yourself up by taking a walk with your pet. Mind you, if it starts to get colder and you feel uncomfortable, go home and cozy up with your pet. You’ll be thanking yourself that you and your pet didn’t get a nasty case of colds.

3. Always check your car.

cold weather
Some stray cats and dogs (but most especially cats) warm up under the car or on top of its hood. To make sure that they are safe, tap or bang on the part of your car where you think they’re cozying up. It will cause you less trouble and you’ll be on your way.

4. Do your homework on your pet’s breed.

cold weather
If you don’t know the breed of your cat or dog, make sure to check-in at a local veterinarian (or possibly, the internet) to know whether they’re in need of extra protection in the cold weather.

5. Give them a sweater or coat.

cold weather
For extra protection. Or cuteness.

6. Make sure their collar is updated.

cold weather
Some pets tend to get in a frenzy during a cold weather. Should they ever get lost, make sure you’ve updated their collar or at least, have put a collar on them with your info on it.

7. Beware of heat stroke.

cold weather
Short-nosed dogs, in particular, are at risk of suffering heat strokes if they come into contact with freezing temperatures and then settle in a warm environment. Be more vigilant of their movements and behavior.

8. Feed your pets.

cold weather
Because of the cold weather, pets have a tendency to bulk up to generate enough energy and keep themselves warm. But don’t overfeed them. It’s also still best to consult with your local veterinarian.

9. Let them stay hydrated.

cold weather
In cold temperatures, some pets like to stay hydrated when they bulk up. Make sure to check their bowl and refill it regularly.

10. Be prepared for cold weather.

cold weather
Sometimes, cold weather can happen unexpectedly. Make sure to watch the local news on weather updates to stock up on the necessary supplies you and your pet needs. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Every 14th of November, the World Diabetes Day is celebrated to raise awareness on persons affected by this disease whose numbers seem to increase over the years. According to WHO, by 2030, diabetes will consequently be among the top 10 most widespread diseases in the world. Notably, the Philippines has more than three (3) million adults with diabetes as of the 2017 records.
With this month’s family-centered theme, the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) has aligned it to the current IDF strategic plan. This two-year time frame will facilitate the planning, developing, promoting, and participating of the said event. It focuses on raising awareness of the impact diabetes has on the family. It also highlights the family’s role in diabetes management, care, prevention, and education of. The IDF will begin releasing promotional materials and campaigns this November for World Diabetes Day to raise awareness about the disease.
Based on the data provided by IDF, the Philippines is one of the 28 nation members of the IDF Western Pacific Region that has more than 5% of prevalence of diabetes in adults. The IDF recorded 6.2% in the Philippines for 2017. This totals the cases of affected Filipino adults to 3,721,900. By 2045, the persons with diabetes in the Western Pacific Region will rise to 183 million out of the affected 425 million people in the world. Right now, less than 1 in 4 family members have access to diabetes education programs. So far, there is no cure to diabetes. We currently only have preventive and management treatments to lessen the effects it has on a person.
Moreover, the WHO stated that the starting point for living well with diabetes is an early diagnosis. The longer a person lives with undiagnosed and untreated diabetes, the worse his or her health conditions are likely to be. A series of cost-effective interventions can improve their outcomes, regardless of what type of diabetes they may have. These interventions include blood glucose control which is combined with a healthy diet, physical activity and, if necessary, medication.
