On the afternoon of November 8, 2016, the PAMET Convention was kicked off, welcoming thousands of medical technologists from around the country into the halls of Marriott Hotel. Every year, this three-day affair is a highlight in the calendars of most Filipino medical technologists and this year’s convention was no exception. The Philippine Association of Medical Technologists, Inc. (PAMET) held its convention for the 52nd year with its strong commitment to educate and learn still unfazed. The theme of the event was ‘Empowering Medical Technologists Towards Global Advancement’, an objective consistent with PAMET’s attitude towards progressive Filipino healthcare.

The first day was spent on the opening ceremonies. The PAMET officials, along with the regional representatives, made their entrance into the ballroom one by one in their best formal wear. Rows after rows of medical technologists watched from their seats as the event officially began. MEDTEK and MAN Pharma, as exhibitors in the event, had set up a joint booth in close proximity with the ballroom’s main door, affording us the chance to hear the guests’ collective booming voices as they sang the PAMET Hymn. As they listened to the speech of PAMET President Ronaldo E. Puno, RMT, MBA-H and held their awarding ceremonies, we were preparing our booth, making sure that we would be all set for their arrival after the formalities inside. A little after lunch, the guests came pouring out the doors and rushing into the exhibits. Our booth immediately became a crowd-favorite, drawing in hundreds of registrants in a span of mere hours. Aside from our display of featured products like Hb-Vario and Laura Smart, the guests were also attracted by the contests we’ve arranged for them. They eagerly participated in our photo contest and registered for our raffle. The winners of our contests were delighted when they were given their very own MEDTEK string bags and jackets.

Plenary sessions took over the majority of the second day’s itinerary. A total of nine plenary talks were given, each taking on a specific issue faced by Filipino medical technologists. The nominees for the 2017-2018 Board of Directors were also presented before lunch. The election for the new board took place soon after. The day ended with a Chapters’ Appreciation Night. For the last day of the convention, the participants attended a series of scientific symposia and paper presentations. MAN Pharma’s very own Ms. Dianne Philline Chan got the chance to present her paper entitled ‘Allergen-Sensitization Profiles using RIDA qLine: Allergy System among Filipinos with HIV’. To draw the entire convention to a close, PAMET threw a celebratory Fellowship Night for its members. Aside from being an opportunity for medical technologists to socialize and network, the event also included some parting words from the guest of honor, Sen. Sherwin T. Gatchalian, and the induction of the new Board of Directors.

For more than half a century, PAMET has provided local medical technologists with a deep sense of community and connection, always fostering an open avenue for discussions. Their yearly convention continues to play a huge role in the collaborative spirit of medical technologists across the country and MEDTEK and MAN Pharma are always honored to contribute to their cause.

MAN Pharma at the 1st ISDFI Convention

[vc_row row_section_id_description=”” row_type_width_description=”” row_padding_right=”300″ row_padding_left=”300″ row_margin_top=”0″ row_margin_bottom=”0″][vc_column][vc_wp_text]

The Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation Inc. (ISDFI) held its annual Dr. Ricardo E. Fernando (REF) Professorial Lecture in Diabetes on October 20 – 22, 2016, gathering the country’s diabetologists once more to confer about the year’s latest developments on diabetes education and treatment. This year, the ISDFI decided to have its 1st Annual Convention alongside the REF Lecture. The foundation hopes that this would help in further solidifying the collective as a singular body working together to better the diabetes care in the Philippines. The theme chosen for the convention was aptly titled ‘ISD: F.I.R.S.T. in Diabetes (Fostering Integrated Research, Service and Teaching)’ since the lectures concentrated more on the importance of proper information dissemination to successful diabetes education. The selected slogan also highlighted ISDFI’s first annual convention, a tremendous milestone for the community.

Most of the participants arrived on the latter part of October 20. They spent the first day of the convention checking into the venue, the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel, and going over their itinerary for the next two days. The convention began its formal program the following day. The exhibits were opened and the guests were free to roam the booths that various pharmaceutical companies had set up for them. MAN Pharma took part in this and greeted the guests with our own booth. There was a steady flow of participants ready to learn more about the analyzers we showcased like the Lipid Pro and Hb-Vario and what these devices could contribute to their laboratories. They were particularly intrigued by our Clover A1c Self-Analyzer and the exclusive promo we had for the product. Our attendance aided the event’s vision for diabetes education by supplying the guests with information about the latest technologies that could potentially assist their medical practice.

The convention’s second and third days were mostly dedicated to plenary lectures and inter-chapter debates. The highlight of the Friday convention was the turnover ceremony wherein Dr. Leorino Sobrepeña stepped down as ISDFI’s President and handed the position over to Dr. Marcelo Lim. Immediately after, the event had the awarding ceremony for ISD alumni. The much-awaited REF Lecture was held the next day, sponsored by Merck Sharp & Dohme Philippines. It imparted essential knowledge to equip diabetologists with the ability to respond to the pressing demands of our country’s current state of healthcare. The convention ended with a Disney-inspired fellowship night where the guests had the opportunity to unwind and bond with their colleagues through a night of costumes, fun, and celebration.

For eighteen years in a row, the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation Inc. has proven itself to be a vital part of our local diabetologists’ efforts to conquer diabetes. Its lectures and debates promote discourses that are needed to solve the barriers standing between us and achieving the ideal diabetes management throughout the country. It has also gone to great lengths to ensure that the diabetology community maintains its close ties. This convention is truly a testament to their solidarity and dedication towards a future free from diabetes.

Through the years, the adverse effects of climate change have seeped into our lives in innumerable ways. One of the more discreet consequences that it has brought is the increasing allergy incidence in the country. The Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Inc. (PSAAI) deemed it fit to be highlighted in their 15th Biennial Convention last September 5 – 6, 2016. In managing the rising rate of allergies, adapting is key – a stance that became the theme of the event. It was labelled as ‘W.A.Z.E.: Winning against Allergies, Zeroing in on Evidence’, a way of likening it to the traffic app WAZE. As with its namesake, expedient navigation is needed to reach the destination. The convention tries to equip medical practitioners with the capability to weave their way through the emerging obstacles to achieve optimal allergy treatment.

The morning of September 5 started early for the event’s participants as they were ushered into the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria at 7 AM for registration. MAN Pharma, along with other medical companies, greeted the incoming spectators with our booths. Our company featured our immunology analyzers in support of the event’s goal of providing better means of allergy detection and management. The participants were able to visit our booth throughout the two-day conference, receiving the latest updates on immunology technology from our MAN Pharma representatives and product catalogues.

Important lectures on allergies were given by known personalities in the country’s health sector. Some of the said guest lecturers were Aileen A. Elorde, MD, DPPS, MCHM of Davao Doctor’s Hospital, Ralph Mösges, MD, PhD, MSEE of the University of Cologne, and Dr. Fe Del Mundo Medical Center’s Maria Carmen D. Ang, MD. PSAAI’s own officers like President Maria Carmela Agustin – Kasala, MD were also among the list of speakers for the convention. Various emerging issues on local allergies were discussed, like the atopic march, allergy drug reactions, and the probability of allergies diminishing through aging.

The conference was also a chance for various companies to promote their brand to the medical representatives present. Aside from the aforementioned exhibit, numerous industry-sponsored luncheon symposia were also held for the guests. This was a way to engage the audience with the newest findings and solutions for various allergy-related topics like allergic rhinitis and food allergies.

By the afternoon of September 6, 2016, the guests were adequately immersed in the recent developments in local allergy, asthma, and immunology. PSAAI has supplied them with the relevant information they’d need for their journey through the changing field of immunology. It’s now up to these medical professionals to put their awareness into motion and be the Filipinos’ guide to a healthier tomorrow.

MAN Pharma at the 14th Joint Annual Convention of PADE-ADNEP

To celebrate their 25th anniversary, the Philippine Association of Diabetes Educators (PADE) and the Association of Diabetes Nurse Educators of the Philippines (ADNEP) hosted the 14th PADE-ADNEP Joint Annual Convention last August 26-27, 2016. The event, which was held at the Century Park Hotel Manila, took on a retrospective premise and looked back at how far our country has come in terms of diabetes management. It also made sure to highlight the various misconceptions we have about diabetes, campaigning to leave the myths behind and to focus on the facts and innovations of diabetes care. The convention was aptly themed ‘You have come a long way… Diabetes Education: Curbing Myths, Crafting Knowledge.’

The doors were opened on August 26, 2016 at 8:00 AM for the participants to flock in and have themselves registered. Majority of the guests were from the medical field, ranging from nurses to pharmacists to nutritionists, and were all united that day by a single purpose: to learn more about diabetes treatment and management. The guests were treated with lectures from some of the distinguished names of our medical industry. This list included Carmelita C. Divinagracia, PhD, MN, RN of the Professional Regulation Commission, President Milabel Enriquez-Ho, EdD, MAN, RN of Western Mindanao State University, and Leorino M. Sobrepeña, MD, FPCP, MS of the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation, Inc. For two days, the convention tackled pressing issues on diabetes like the effects of anti-diabetic drugs on pregnant women and the place of diabetes educators in the ASEAN integration. The participants were also encouraged to conduct their own researches on diabetes with a case presentation prepared by the convention’s research committee.

Throughout the event, the guests were granted access to the exhibits set up by various medical companies. MAN Pharma was one of the companies given the opportunity to put its own booth up for the event. We seized the chance to showcase our latest technologies on diabetes care, promoting them to the numerous medical representatives in attendance. Our participation in the conference further proved our commitment to aiding diabetes care professionals with the best equipment in battling the disease.

It could be said that the two-day conference’s success was the result of the multiple factors it had going for itself: its renowned line-up of speakers, its well-managed program, its conducive venue, etc. But its accomplishment was mostly due to its guests. These knowledge-seeking medical practitioners left that evening of August 27 with a deeper sense of understanding on diabetes care and a clearer role in promoting proper diabetes education. With these in their minds, PADE-ADNEP delivered what they had set out to do: to learn from the past for a better future.
