Every 14th of November, the World Diabetes Day is celebrated to raise awareness on persons affected by this disease whose numbers seem to increase over the years. According to WHO, by 2030, diabetes will consequently be among the top 10 most widespread diseases in the world. Notably, the Philippines has more than three (3) million adults with diabetes as of the 2017 records.
With this month’s family-centered theme, the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) has aligned it to the current IDF strategic plan. This two-year time frame will facilitate the planning, developing, promoting, and participating of the said event. It focuses on raising awareness of the impact diabetes has on the family. It also highlights the family’s role in diabetes management, care, prevention, and education of. The IDF will begin releasing promotional materials and campaigns this November for World Diabetes Day to raise awareness about the disease.
Based on the data provided by IDF, the Philippines is one of the 28 nation members of the IDF Western Pacific Region that has more than 5% of prevalence of diabetes in adults. The IDF recorded 6.2% in the Philippines for 2017. This totals the cases of affected Filipino adults to 3,721,900. By 2045, the persons with diabetes in the Western Pacific Region will rise to 183 million out of the affected 425 million people in the world. Right now, less than 1 in 4 family members have access to diabetes education programs. So far, there is no cure to diabetes. We currently only have preventive and management treatments to lessen the effects it has on a person.
Moreover, the WHO stated that the starting point for living well with diabetes is an early diagnosis. The longer a person lives with undiagnosed and untreated diabetes, the worse his or her health conditions are likely to be. A series of cost-effective interventions can improve their outcomes, regardless of what type of diabetes they may have. These interventions include blood glucose control which is combined with a healthy diet, physical activity and, if necessary, medication.

IDEXX and Man Pharma partnered up once more to present our lecture series on animal vector-borne diseases to Visayan vets. Flying all the way to Bacolod, the Man Pharma – IDEXX team had set up the stage for vets to learn more about the current diagnostic technologies for vector-borne diseases.

Veterinarians from various regions of Visayas headed towards the L’Fisher Chalet’s rooftop last June 28 for the IDEXX lecture on vector-borne diseases. A sumptuous buffet dinner was firstly setup to welcome the guests. To officially commence the event, the night’s speaker was introduced to her audience. From then on, Dr. Rachael Kilroy, with her 15 years of veterinary practice and her experience in the IDEXX Training and Education team, gladly spoke about her expertise to fellow veterinarians.

The discourse afterwards revolved around the most common vector-borne diseases in the Philippines. These consequently included heartworm, ehrlichia, anaplasma, babesia, and Lyme disease. The discussion allowed the Singapore-based speaker and Filipino vets to compare their encounters with VBDs. This provided everyone with new insights on the problems and innovations experienced by Southeast Asian vets.

To accurately identify the aforementioned vector-borne diseases, IDEXX presented the vet attendees with the best diagnostic tools – the SNAP tests. Dr. Rachael Kilroy featured the numerous technological advancements that the SNAP tests employ to ensure fast and precise results. SNAP tests’ benefits in addition to the event’s special discount encouraged our guests to integrate the SNAP tests into their vet practice.

The question and answer section that followed was spirited and collaborative. The vets consulted Dr. Kilroy for advice on topics such as administering medication and frequency of SNAP test use. The lecturer answered them as best as she could, using both her knowledge and experience in response. With all questions sufficiently answered, the group took a commemorative group photo. The lecture attendees then made their way home, each with a deeper understanding of the value of vector-borne disease diagnostics.

In collaboration with IDEXX Laboratories, Man Pharma hosted an informative lecture on the vector-borne diseases affecting Filipino dogs and cats. The Crowne Plaza served as the venue for this symposium on the evening of May 28, 2018. Its attendees were veterinarians from the different regions of Luzon, all ready to discuss vector-borne diseases in the context of the Philippines with their peers.

Driving the conversation is IDEXX Training and Education’s Dr. Rachael Kilroy. Beginning at 6:30 PM, Dr. Kilroy began her lecture by presenting our audience with in-depth data on vector-borne diseases. She most notably talked about heartworm, ehrlichia, anaplasma, babesia, and Lyme disease. Her engaging lecture then steered to the available diagnostics for the said diseases. Dr. Kilroy highlighted the pros and cons of various diagnostic methods like microscopy and lateral flow tests. After this topic discussion, everyone agreed that the SNAP 4Dx test, with its complex mechanism compacted into a simplistic procedure, serves veterinarians with both the accuracy and convenience that they expect from their diagnostic tools. Our guest veterinarians were also able to test their diagnostic skills with case studies and digital poll quizzes. Throughout the talk, our audience were also treated with the hotel’s complimentary dinner and dessert buffet.

The night ended with a lively Q&A session about the various cases and concerns that our veterinarians have faced in their practice. Dr. Rachael Kilroy consequently provided them with insights from her 15 years of experiences as a practicing veterinarian. With a short closing remark and a group photo, the gathering eventually drew to a close at around 10:00 PM. From the event, our guests gained a deeper understanding of how diagnostic accuracy could dictate the effectiveness of the treatments they deliver. Hopefully, our participants also developed a greater appreciation of the veterinary community and how shared experience can be a highly informative and reliable source for their everyday practice.

On the Thursday morning of March 22, 2018, PSEDM greeted hundreds of doctors and other medical professionals from all over the country to this year’s PSEDM Convention. The Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Inc. While the first batch of lectures was ongoing, Man Pharma and the other convention sponsors were busy readying the booths for the upcoming exhibit opening. For this event, Man Pharma gave a special promo. A Clover Self A1c analyzer were to be given on loan to any laboratory or clinic that would purchase two boxes of Clover cartridges. These loaned machines could remain in their practice as long as they order and use its cartridges. The promo was successful in attracting the attention of the visiting crowd. Our representatives were able to receive numerous inquiries and product demonstration requests from prospective clients. We also promoted our other Diabetes Care division products such as the LipidPro and GluNEO Lite.
